Dedication
for memorial windows in honor of Alele Naklie Shamis
At the time of Adele Shamis' death, her children approached
St. Alphonsus Church with a request to find a fitting and
appropriate way to honor the memory of a woman very committed
and true to her faith. This memorial would have to reflect
Adele's love for her church and her appreciation for beauty
and finally the commission would have to witness to the
sense of sacred space within the church sanctuary.
After several mettings and discussions, the decision was
made to pursue the commission of the five windows in the
reservation screen wall situated immediately behind the
alter. The original concept for framing the central panel
which would contain an image of the holy spirit as a dove
with rays emanating outward. A clear central ray would expose
the original tabernacle which resides in the chapel defined
by the screen.
Photographs of a pair of plaster angels which were part
of the original rear altar were sent ot Conrad Schmidt Studios
and their workshop began sending sketchens and cartoons
of how the windows could be designed. After seven versions,
a final design was approved and agreed upon by the church
and by the family of Adele Shamis and the workshop executed
the five windows in November of 2008 The church received
delivery in early December, and the windows were installed
in time for previewing at Christmas. They were dedicated
at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, January 25, 2009, by Father Bill
Henry.
