Midway through college at Ole Miss she moved to California, and began attending Woodbury College where she graduated with a business degree and then landed a secretarial job with a multi-branched Los Angeles bank. While there she competed in a sales contest against 6,000 other bank employees and won first prize. That one event led to a promotion. She then worked as a National Sales Representative for Merle Norman Cosmetics, finding locations for their studios throughout the United States. Next, she assumed the position as Sales Director at the posh Fairmount Hotel in Dallas, responsible for booking parties and conventions, while at the same time becoming "Miss Fairmount". In true Shamis style, she worked with a vengeance and soon developed many excellent business contacts, which would serve her well in future years.

Upon leaving the hotel business she earned her real estate license and took the plunge into the male dominated field of commercial leasing, first in Mexico where she sold luxury resort property for Tres Vidas, and then back in Dallas. During her first year she experienced immediate success, an overwhelming $5 million in leases, a direct reflection of her gutsy attitude and less than conventional style. During that same period, Shamis also got a taste of the residential market and found that she liked it. History has proven that Shamis can sell anything she really likes.
